The tourist dpt of the Embassy of Spain in Russia announced the country has welcome its millionth visitors from the Russian market for 2012 (the news to be officially announced with details on 30.10.2012 during a press-conference and function for the occasion). The Russian market produced 645 000 arrivals in 2011 which makes the increase almost a double in one year's lap.
Main stakeholders of the destination in the market explain this astounding jump with a very collaborative visa policy from the visa dpt of the Spanish consulates (which delivers multiple entry visas for 6 to 12 months, as many of their Schengen colleagues) and the fact that the country's economy is experiencing a challenging period and many hotels and other tourists companies have lowered their prices to keep their clientele in a highly competitive environment. One correlative result is the drop of margin and rentability for the Russian TO's but the high number of sales made the destination financially interesting to sell, at the end of the day. From this one can say that part of this million visitors is made of 2 & 3 star accommodation price segment, though many 4* have been selling at discounted (if not dumping) prices, on continental Spain which tends to become in some places a mass tourism destination for the Russian market with some regions attracting a more up-market clientele and interesting MICE (the latter tradionnally producing highly appreciated extra revenues). For the Spanish Islands, the situation looks better as they keep attracting the higher segments of the market and Russian TO's are quite happy with their commissions on selling the Canary and the Balearic Islands.
